Improving your sleep quality

Benefits of improving your sleep quality

Recently I’ve been paying attention to the quality of my sleep.  It’s been a busy year both on the work and personal front so I had started to get used to feeling tired all the time, however I noticed it wasn’t improving.

There’s a wealth of evidence that poor sleep doesn’t just leave you feeling tired—it can intensify stress, anxiety, and even lead to burnout.

Over the past year, I noticed my own sleep quality declining, despite regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle. A fitness tracker showed low scores night after night, and I realised it was time to make some changes. I cut back on that nightly glass of wine, started eating earlier, and committed to a relaxing evening routine. These small adjustments have already started making a difference.

You may be feeling a bit ‘off’ or rubbish yourself but perhaps don’t link your ‘symptoms’ to poor sleep. Recognised Signs of Poor Sleep Quality:

💤🛌 Daytime Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired, even after a full night’s rest.

💤🛌 Irritability and Mood Swings: Increased irritability, impatience, or frequent emotional outbursts.

💤🛌 Cognitive Impairment: Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions.

💤🛌 Physical Discomfort: Headaches, muscle aches, or general discomfort that doesn’t have a clear cause.

💤🛌 Sleepiness During Passive Activities: Nodding off while sitting in meetings, watching TV, or even driving.

💤🛌 Worsening Anxiety or Depression: Increased anxious thoughts or deeper feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

💤🛌 Weight Fluctuations and Cravings: Unexplained weight gain or strong cravings for high-carb and sugary foods.

Sleep is more than just a physical necessity—it’s essential for maintaining mental clarity and emotional balance, especially during life transitions. While it’s natural for sleep to be disrupted during major events like becoming a parent, going through a breakup, or navigating a career or life change, there are actionable steps you can take to minimise the impact on your rest

As a Happiness Club Trainer, we teach clients techniques to improve our sleep, so I’ve been going back to basics and ensuring I am following these myself.  I also treated myself to a massage last week.  It’s early days however I am beginning to notice a change for the better and I am already much less tired, able to think more clearly and achieving more with my time.

For anyone struggling with sleep I’d recommend these practical steps:

  • Establish a Calming Pre-Bed Routine: Engage in activities like reading or gentle stretching to signal your brain that it’s time to wind down.
  • Mindful Eating and Drinking: Avoid late-night meals and limit alcohol and caffeine, which can disrupt sleep patterns.  Increase your water intake throughout the day – many of us do not take on board sufficient water for our needs.
  • Incorporate Stress-Relief Techniques: Practices like meditation or deep breathing can ease your mind and help you drift off more easily.
  • Also try removing the tech from the bedroom (yep difficult I know), if you can’t leave your devices out of the room, then ensure they are on airplane mode.

If you’re still finding it hard to get the restful sleep you need, especially when underlying stress or anxiety is at play, then perhaps it’s time to talk to someone and get some extra help.  This could be your GP or another health professional, therapist, or even a good friend – the important thing is to talk about it and also to rule out any underlying medical condition.

As a hypnotherapist I can also help to offer targeted support.  It’s an effective way to address the root causes of sleep disturbances, helping you achieve the restorative sleep that’s essential for mental well-being.  I can also design and deliver wellbeing workshops for the workplace and community groups.
